Listening to God

Listening When He Speaks, Poetry

Zip your jacket and lace those boots. Stuff hands deep into pockets.
Now, walk with me along this winter-laced lane because —

I only can hear
with my heart
my soul
and even my tears,

when I stop the noise
and delay that clatter
that reaches desperately
for my ears

He speaks
in nourishing tones
as though watering with
the Word

He speaks
in gentle whispers
through the Spirit’s soft voice like
a heaven-sent songbird

I only can hear
with my heart
my soul
and even my tears,

when I stop the noise
and delay that clatter
that reaches desperately
for my ears
My heart is oh so very tender with yearning to hear. And deep-rooted desires to finally obey. In this place of mine, I must listen with more than with my ears. Gentle Ann speaks of listening to God… Please, join me in her yard as we gather to Walk with Him this very Wednesday.

  1. This speaks to me. I am reading a book right now by a monk–a hermit–a student of Thomas Merton's. He speaks of solitude as one speaks of a lover. And it is in these quiet moments when the Lover of My Soul comes to me. When I ignore His voice, I am the one who suffers.I am sending my hugs your way…
