Today I will share the letter (that I also keep handy to guide my talking points for phone calls) that I sent to both my senators and my representative last Friday. From what I understand, snail-mail letters take weeks to reach their recipients and mass e-mail form letters are largely ignored. Since I cannot galavant off to my legislator’s marbled floor hallways and rap-rap-rap on their doors, I’m stickin’ with faxes, personal emails, and phone calls. It did cost me two greenback per page to send my letters, that’s twelve bucks total, but I think it’s worth it. How ’bout you? (Try as I may, I could not get my points narrowed down to one page. My bad.)

Miss Kathy Jackson of The Cornered Cat site recently linked to my A Christian Woman’s Stance on Firearms series. What a neato-mosquito, fantastical suprise to have a leader in the firearms education industry notice this country girl’s ramblings. Thank ya, ma’am. By the way, I know of a few folks that are buying and/or have already purchased your book, “The Cornered Cat: A Woman’s Guide to Concealed Carry” (White Feather Press, 2010) because of this series. I appreciate how you fill a much-needed niche in this arena. I’d also like to thank all of the new SimplyDarlene readers for your respectful, and oftentimes encouraging, comments. May the good Lord bless you in all that you do. And even if someone disagrees, that’s okay too. I’m not trying to change minds, I’m just letting you take a peek inside of mine.

Dear LEGISLATOR – NAME INSERT,

 .

Please oppose any and all proposed Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) bills, similar initiatives, and any other restrictive Second Amendment legislation that may come across your desk while you are in office. As your constituent, I ask you to first consider the fact that guns are inert objects that do not possess the ability, desire, and/or capability to harm innocent victims. It is people who are ruled by evil that do the devil’s deeds and demolish innocence.

 .

In addition, please review the following statistics and statements that are vital to this matter:

 .

=> The number of right-to-carry states has increased over the last 20 years.

 .

I am a woman, I am smaller, I am weaker, and I am more at-risk to be the victim of a crime. If attacked, my odds for survivability are bolstered only because I can legally carry and use a concealed firearm and/or keep one in my home for defense. And since wolves travel in packs, the whole idea of banning ten-round plus magazines makes me shudder. What am I supposed to do if nine rounds aren’t enough? My rural county’s emergency response time is thirty minutes on a good day. A lot of bad can happen to someone good in that timeframe.

 .

As you know, this current proposed AWB proposes to ban “high-capacity” magazines and the guns that use them. So, many vintage firearms that have been in American families for over one hundred years are on the list! A lot of rifles that are only good for target-range plinking and shooting pack rats in the back forty are also on the “assault” weapons list. Why? Because they have the capacity to hold fifteen (15) rounds?

 .

.

=>  There has been a 50% reduction in violent crime rates over the last 20 years.

 .

You might not be aware of this because the news media hasn’t reported it, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has the data on their public website – see FBI Uniform Crime Reports Table 1. With further study, you will find that majority of these crimes happen within concentrated metropolitan areas (a.k.a. inner city neighborhoods) by gang-bangers, by outright criminals.

 .

As gun rights have increase, violent crimes have correspondently decreased.

.

 .

=>  Almost three million Americans bought firearms just last month (December 2012).

 .

Businesses make and sell ammunition; companies make and sell gun-related accessories; manufacturers build firearms; countless training courses and classes are taught and attended; instructional books and DVDs are written, produced, and published; online stores and brick-n-mortar outlets sell these goods. All of this gun-related activity means the firearms industry is economically sound and it helps to keep a lot of my fellow Americans employed.

 .

Speaking of money, firearms that fall into the proposed AWB are slated to be registered, along with a $200.00 per firearm taxation fee. In turn, literally millions of legally owned guns will be under scrutiny and law-abiding owners of said guns will be penalized because they’ve purchased (with their hard-earned money) guns and/or own firearms that they’ve inherited from great-grandpa.

 .

.

=>So-called “Gun-Free” zones have been the sites (i.e. schools, shopping malls, military bases, and movie theaters) for America’s worst shootings (except for one, involving congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords). Along with that, cities with the most restrictive gun laws have the highest rates of crime (see Chicago’s crime stats).

 .

I bet the bad guys are impressed with the proposed AWB legislation – they already know that citizens who cannot protect/defend themselves are the very ones who make the easiest targets, the best victims. Time and again this has been proven. In contrast, when mass shooters face opposition, they stop the attack, retreat, and take their own lives (refer to Clackamas Mall incident in December 2012).

 .

.

Please tell me why, I, along with other law-abiding American citizens, need to be under-armed and penalized because a relative few persons with mental deficiencies have perpetrated heinous crimes with guns? As an elected official, it is your duty to represent the good people of your state. Please review the statistics. Facts don’t lie. I am a woman who needs a way to deter violent crime by evening the playing field. Are you going to take that from me?

 .

America’s Second Amendment says: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” You might also recall that Democratic Party lost fifty-four (54) seats in the House with the 1994 mid-term elections (oftentimes referred to as the “Republican Revolution”) during the original AWB implementation. A lot of folks, including me, take serious what our founding fathers intended to protect.

 .

Once again, I encourage you to oppose any and all proposed Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) bills, similar initiatives, and any other restrictive Second Amendment legislation.

 .

Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

 .

Sincerely,

SimplyDarlene

* Please note: this is not the exact letter I sent out. I researched each recipient’s platform/issues and tailored the letter by including a sentence or two thanking them for their leadership and commitment to an arena that I appreciated. As it turns out, my two Washington state senators are committed to protecting women against violence. Just a little bit of research gave me a important tie-in for the theme of my letter. I reckon you realize that respect and appreciation go a long way, especially with such a heated topic as gun control.

* If you so desire to lend your voice to this topic, please feel free do so; but, just as I have tried my utmost to use a respectful, non-condescending tone, I expect the same from you. My comments are set to author approval so don’t go gettin’ your knickers in a knot if your comment doesn’t immediately appear. I do have family & household duties to attend to before I approve everything here. Thank you.

Also, you can take a gander around this site to read about (and follow links) how regular law-abiding folks & their guns have saved lives. After you read it, please contact your senators and your  state’s congressman/congresswoman at their offices and/or send a note via automated system here.

  1. Hi Darlene,
Thanks for leading us to the next step with concise, factual information, ideas and resources. You are a gem.

Hope your day tomorrow is grand. So glad Kathy referenced you … together we are a stronger voice.

p.s. wait till you hear what happened to me at the range tonight… the timing was unreal. I’ll send a message.

    • Miss Patricia-Butterfly,
(I left you a note here last night, but it got eaten…) Anyway, you are most welcome for this series and whatnot.

Regarding what happened with you at the range, wow. I’m glad you had the knowledge and gumption to stand up and speak out.

      BLessings.

    Dear Darlene,
Just found you on the Cornered Cat!! You are great!! I agree with all you’ve written regarding the gun control legislature!! On spot!! I’m in Oklahoma, married to a Texan who has always had and shot guns of all types!! I’ve recently taken the CCW class here in Okc at a wonderful gun range called H&H !! Wonderfull people on a mission to educate and inform people of all ages and gender on the right to bear arms!! They have taught me what I need to know on the importance of legally and safely owning a firearm!! I should have my permit here in a month or so!! Here in Oklahoma we can legally open carry !! Kinda scary to me!! As per my instructor at H&H said “why give someone the advantage of knowing you are packing heat!!” I do agree!! To me it’s my advantage for the bad guy not knowing!! I will be following you from now on and letting some friends know about your wonderful blog!!

    Keeping the faith,
    Lisa Lettenmaier

    • Miss Lisa,
Thank you for visiting (and for the kudos). Miss Kathy Jackson’s book is such a storehouse of information… I hope you have a copy!

      Blessings.

    • Miss Laura,
I’m glad you stopped by. It’s been interesting to think that most of my online friends probably disagree with me – so I just wanted to share my heart and the hard facts.

As always, you are my personal Barnabas. Thank you, miss.

      Blessings.

I have finally had the time to sit and read through this series Darlene. You’ve done an outstanding job Darlene. I like the way you have made everything so clear. If I hadn’t already felt the same way,I believe you would have won me over. I’ thankful our representatives agree with us.
I’m so proud of you girl!

    • Miss Linda! Yay, it’s good to see you here. Thank you for the kudos and the encouragement.

And I’m glad someone’s legislators agree; my rep does, but interestingly, my senators don’t. They support programs for women who are the victim’s of violence – while I support empowering women not to be the victim in the first place.

Anyway, you and your words are appreciated muchly.

      Blesslings.

If you have somethin' to say, I reckon this is where you should do it. (If you're a newbie hereabouts, your first comment will be held for approval - cuts down on spam.) Thank ye for chatting!
